R1200RT verbeteringen #3: Zijstandaard/bok verlichting

Overdag is het niet zo'n probleem maar als je op pad bent met je motor en het is donker geworden, dan kan het neerzetten van de RT op de bok of zijstandaard nog wel eens een uitdaging zijn. Tegenwoordig zijn er waterdichte LED's te koop met een verlichtingsterkte van zo'n 100 Lumen die heel geschikt zijn om de plek waar je je bok of zijstandaard neerzet te verlichten. Je vookomt dan dat je met motor en al omkiepert als je toch op een te zachte plek staat. Aangezien "onderverlichting" in Nederland verboden is, brand de verlichting alleen als de motor uitgeschakeld is en het contact aan staat. Automatisch en legaal!

Materiaal:

• Luxeon 1W, 60 graden, helder witte LED
• 350mA constante stroom voeding t.b.v. LED
• Beugeltje
• Dunne kabels en een connector

R1200RT verbeteringen #2: Stebel Nautilus Compact luchthoorn

De claxon op de huidige versie van de R1200RT is maar een zielig geval. Een enkelvoudig zoemertje waar de overige weggebruikers geen boodschap aan hebben. Nu ben ik niet een enthousiaste gebruiker van de toeter maar heel soms is het fijn als je de aandacht kan trekken. De keuze is gevallen op de Stebel Nautilus Compact. Een compacte Italiaanse luchthoorn die precies in het rechter zijpaneel past. Alsof 'ie daarvoor gemaakt is! BMW: een ideetje?

Het monteren vereist wat puzzelen en wat extra bedrading om zo'n toeter van stroom te voorzien. Hij trekt al gauw 17A en dat is te veel voor de bestaande BMW bedrading.

Benodigdheden:

• Stebel Nautilus Compact
• Relais, 12V/50A
• Zekeringhouder met 20A zekering
• Wat kabelschoenen, tie-raps, krimpkous, "ijzerdraad en isolatieband"

De montage:

• Bedrading: neem lekker dikke draden. Ik gebruik hier 2x 1.5qmm luidsprekerkabel met rode (plus) en zwarte (min) isolatie. Controleer dat bedrading goed vast zit maar toch ruimte heeft om wat te bewegen. Ook is het verstandig om de bedrading zo in te richten dat deze weer gemakkelijk (tijdelijk?) verwijderd kan worden
• Relais: Koop een vette waterdichte (50A, bijv. bij Conrad) en soldeer een zogenaamde 1N4007 "blus diode" op de relaisspoel (zie schema) om piekspanningen op het boordnet te voorkomen.
• Kabelschoenen: gebruik de blauwe kabelschoenen. Deze kunnen tot maximaal 2.5qmm bedrading aan
• Tak de bestaande claxon draden af en let op de plus en de min als je ze aansluit op het relais (i.v.m. "blus diode")
• Zekering: hier is een platte zekeringhouder met LED indicatie voor een defecte zekering gebruikt. Merk op dat als de zekering defect is, het LEDje alleen brand als de claxon gebruiker wordt
• Claxon: de meegeleverde beugel past precies. Zet de claxon goed vast en zorg voor een extra zekering d.m.v. een tie-rap naar de beugel van de cruise-control unit.

R1200RT verbeteringen #1: Spatbordverlenger

De R1200RT is al aardig compleet "af fabriek". Echter d'r zijn natuurlijk zaken die verbeterd kunnen worden. Als eerste de obligatore voorspatbord verlenger. Het is mij onduidelijk waarom deze zo kort uitgevoerd wordt.

Er zijn (tot zover ik weet) twee modellen. Een van Wunderlich en een van Pyramid Plastics. Ik heb de Pyramid Plastics gemonteerd.

Kosten: ~EUR25,-

Tijd: ~1 uur.

Methode:

• Maak het bestaande spatbord schoon en ontvet. 
• Plak de spatbordverlenger tegen het bestaande spatbord
• Gebruik de bijgeleverde zelftappers of (zoals hier) gebruik RVS M3 boutjes met zelfborgende moeren. Je doet hier de monteur een plezier mee aangezien de zelftappers nogal scherp zijn.

Resultaat:

BMW R1200RT made in eastern Europe?

Yes, I got my BMW R1200RT in July. Got around 4000km on the odometer now. The bike rides like expected but...

It seems that this bike was build with eastern European quality standards and, let's say, less motivated employees. A short list:

• Some screws (Torx) could be removed by hand. No tools necessary.
• Some other Torx screws were destroyed, possibly putting to much force or slipping tool during manufacturing.
• It took extreme force to remove the left pannier from the frame.
• The mudguard on the back is not aligned with the center of the bike and it is damaged due to the friction to the sidepanel.
• The panniers are mounted asymmetric, one is only one millimeter away from the buddy handle.
• The buddyseat frame is already rusty.
• The right mirror (the glass) just fell off, luckily for me in my own garage and it dropped on a soft surface.
• The radio lid, left of the tank, blew off. That one I had to replace.
• There is some strange noise (a sharp bang) coming out of the rear drive shaft so now and then.
• The front lights were adjusted way too high, blinding all upcoming traffic.
• The cruisecontrol sometimes decides to select its own speed which means here full speed.

Most of these issues I repaired myself (which should be part of the bike fun) but I didn't expect this from a EUR22k bike. My previous bike, a Honda Deauville/NT700VA (build in Spain), was not perfect either, but that list and severity was much shorter than the Beemer. The Honda was also half of the price of this bike...

The BMW dealer tries to make the best out of it but I'm not sure that this BMW R1200RT and me will become friends.

Bigger disks in an Iomega IX2-200

The IX2-200 is a NAS that supports 2 harddisks. You can configure the disks in JBOD and RAID1. My model had 2x 1TB disks which I ran in RAID1. One disk failed. A good moment to check if I could deploy bigger disks. The initial problem is that a new disk is configured at the size of the old. So, using a new 2TB disk will only give 1TB of storage.

This post will explain how you can easy upgrade to larger disks, using only the IX2-200 webpages.

IX2-200

WARNING: following these steps will DESTROY all your data. I suggest you create a backup first and verify that the backup was successful or leave the box as it is.

Starting situation:

• IX2-200 with the latest firmware (2.1.38). 
• 2x 1TB Seagate Barracuda LP disk in RAID1 (effectively ~1TB storage capacity).
• Failed RAID1 set.

Actions:

1. Create a backup of all the data/shares. Verify the backups!
2. Remove one of the disks (in my case the failing disk) and add a new, larger disk.
3. A rebuild of the RAID1 set will start. 
4. Change the disk configuration to JBOD (Settings > Disks > Manage Disks > Data Protection > Without data protection...). WARNING: this is the point where your data gets lost!
5. The IX2-200 will reboot and construct the JBOD. This will take a few minutes. Wait until the JBOD is ready.
6. Shutdown and replace the other disk with one of the same capacity as the other new disk.
7. Startup and wait for the JBOD to be ready again.
8. Change the disk configuration to RAID1 (Settings > Disks > Manage Disks > Data Protection > Mirror based...).
9.  The IX2-200 will reboot and construct the RAID1 set. Rebuild speed is ~250GB/hr.
10. Restore the users, groups, settings, shares and data.

Current situation:

• 2x 2TB Samsung HD204UI disks in RAID1 (effectively ~2TB storage capacity).

Problems:

• Impatience. It will take a few minutes before changes are reworked and many hours to rebuild a RAID1 set.
• Broken IX2-200 firmware/system software. See this blog post to rebuild a completely broken IX2-200 firmware/system software. Note: the provided IX2-200 software might be updated to the latest version. This is out of the scope of my post.
  There is also a method using a USB stick with image. You can use http://{ix2 ip}/diagnostics.html (Cloud edition) for SSH and other diagnostics methods.
• Other Iomega NASs. This post might work on other Iomega NAS devices but this has not been tested.
• Other brand NASs. You are on your own.

"The Best Evah'...!". Remote Control

During my holiday I was confronted with a best product ever: the Philips SBC RU 151 remote control. Only six buttons and one LED. Volume up/down, mute, Prog up/down and power. No fifty million buttons for functions you never use (or understand). Just switch on the TV, select the channel and volume. You're done.
